ENDOWMENT PRIZES/AWARDS Instituted by the College
Shillong College is happy to announce a number of academic awards for the meritorious students to create more enthusiasm among them to pursue higher education with zeal. The Awards have been implemented from the Golden Jubilee Year (2006) of the College and they are as follows:

  • “S. C. DUTTA MEMORIAL PRIZE” – Family members of the Founder Principal of the College (Late) Shri Sudhindra Chandra Dutta, donated a sum of Rs. 10,000/- for instituting award for the students excelling in academic field. The authority of the College deemed it fit to institute the award by contributing a matching grant from its own fund and creating a fund from which such award may be given every year. This is named as “S. C. DUTTA MEMORIAL PRIZE’ and to be awarded to student of the college securing highest mark in Honours subject – one in each stream. The award includes a cash prize worth Rs. 1000.00 and a citation.

  • N. K. SARKAR PRIZE IN ENGLISH – Former Vice Principal of the College Shri N. K. Sarkar (Department of English) donated a sum of Rs. 10,000/- at the time of his retirement and requested the College to institute an award for the students of the College securing highest marks in English in either Board or University examination every year. The College, on its part, contributed a matching grant to create a fund and instituted a prized called “N. K. SARKAR PRIZE IN ENGLISH”.

  • D. MUKHERJEE PRIZE IN PHYSICS – Former Vice Principal of the College Shri D. Mukherjee (Department of Physics) donated a sum of Rs. 10,000/- at the time of his retirement and requested the College to institute an award for the students of the College securing highest marks in English in either Board or University examination every year. The College, on its part, contributed a matching grant to create a fund and instituted a prized called “D. MUKHERJEE PRIZE IN ENGLISH”.

  • SMT. R. DEVI PRIZE IN ZOOLOGY – Former Vice Principal of the College Smt. Rekha Devi (Department of Zoology) donated a sum of Rs. 10,000/- at the time of her retirement and requested the College to institute an award for the students of the College securing highest marks in Zoology in either Board or University examination every year. The College, on its part, contributed a matching grant to create a fund and instituted a prized called “R. DEVI PRIZE IN ZOOLOGY”.

  • T. J. KHARBHIH MEMORIAL AWARD IN CHEMISTRY: Family members of Late Shri T. J. Kharbhih, former Head of the Department of Chemistry donated a sum of Rs. 50,000/- to the college for using the same for the benefit of meritorious and needy students. Management of the College has decided to institute two awards honouring Late Kharbhih. One award amounting Rs. 1,500.00 is given to the student who clears B. Sc. (Honours in Chemistry) final examination every year with best result amongst all the successful students of the college. Second award is given to the student who secures maximum marks in Chemistry in the HSSLC examination with minimum condition that she/he must have secured first division and marks in chemistry is not less than 60.

It is to the credit of the donors that such awards could be institutionalised with matching grants from the college. The names of the students who received these awards, year-wise, are as follows:

    • NCC Award for best performer:
      Sgt. Snaborlang Nonglamin (NDS/13/10000) of B. Sc. 2nd Year – Rs. 5,000.00.
      J.U.O Grace Nongrum of Class XII Arts – Rs. 5,000.00.
    • NSS Award for Best Performer.
      Grace Adieu Pasi of B. A. 2nd year – Rs. 5,000.00.
      Rida Wanbha Nongbri of B. A. 3rd year – Rs. 5,000.00
    • Award for Best Performer in Sports and Games, NSS, NCC at the National or
      State Level.
      Redeem Tlang – Footballer – National Level (N.E. United Club) of B. A. 3rd Year –
      Rs. 5,000.00.
    • Awards by Shillong College Alumni Association.
    • Special Scholarship and Stipend for Physically Handicapped Students.

 

  • SCHOLARSHIPS
    • “Nirjharini Deb Roy and Biman Behari Deb Roy Memorial Scholarship for Girls Student of the College pursuing PG Studies”:

      Noted economist of the country Prof. Bibek Debroye, whose mother was a donor
      member of the Governing Body of the College in its formative years in late 1960s and
      early 1970s, has donated a sum of Rs. 4.0 lakhs for instituting a Post-graduate
      scholarship for the student of the college who would pursue master degree and has
      acquired first class with good rank in the graduate level final examination. A
      Scholarship has been instituted titled “Nirjharini Deb Roy and Biman Behari Deb Roy
      Memorial Scholarship” for the student of the College who pursue P. G. studies
      securing highest marks in the Degree level final examination.
      First recipient of the scholarship, started from 2014, is Smt. Parijat Hazarika, who
      stood first class first in the B. Sc. (Microbiology) and studying M. Sc. in Microbiology
      in Assam University, Silchar.

    • T. J. Kharbhih Memorial Scholarship in Chemistry:
      Nine more scholarships (3 each from B. Sc. First year, second year and third year of
      Chemistry Honours) have been instituted from 2014-15, for the students who
      pursue B. Sc. (Chemistry honours) in the college. This Scholarship is named as T. J.
      Kharbhih Memorial Scholarship and awardees will be selected every year under
      standard set of norm finalised by the college.
