College Library

Shillong College Library was established in the year 1956, and the Library started immediately.  However, a professional librarian was appointed in 1996 (Smt. W. Dkhar, who subsequently proceeded for a job in NEIGRIMS in 2006) with the creation of the post of Librabrian (by the State Government) and on the 28th May 1997 a new Library hall was inaugurated by Mr. W. M. S Pariat, the then Senior Indian Administrative Officer and Commissioner of Education of the Government of Meghalaya.  Presently, Smt. B. Lyngdoh is the librarian and looking after all activities of Library with the help from other library staff and the Library Advisory Committee.

Seeing the growing needs, keenness and enthusiasm of the students, the former Principal of the College Dr. (Mrs.) M.P.R. Lyngdoh felt the necessity to extend the library and on 1st September 2007 the library was extended with another reading room adjacent to the existing one, with a total of 135 seating capacity and one Internet Section with 21 computers which provides internet facility to all the staff and students of the College.The library is also a member of The American Library | Kolkata, and subscribed to N-LIST Programme at INFLIBNET Centre Ahmedabad.

The Library caters to the needs of around 2500 students in 7 streams and having a total collection more than 28,000 books in 23 subjects, 31 journals of different subjects both Foreign and Indian Edition, 47 different magazines titles, 3 local Newspaper and 5 National Newspaper and an additional of general reference books and North East collection.

The main objective of the Shillong College Library is to collect, organize, retrieve, update and disseminate information effectively and efficiently to cater to the needs and development of the students and teachers alike and equip them with the necessary information to keep pace with the changes in the environment.

Rules and Regulations of the Library.

  1. Silence is to be maintained inside and outside (verandah) the library (Meetings, Group Discussions, Chatting etc are not allowed inside the Library).
  2. Using of Mobile phones inside the library is strictly prohibited to all users, Laptops, Tablets and other Electronic gadgets are allowed with prior permission from the Librarian.
  3. Before entering the library, all Library users are to write down their names in the register kept at the entrance.
  4. Bags and personal belongings are to be kept in the rack near the counter, except valuables such as wallets and Mobile phones (off mode). The Library authority will not be held responsible for any theft or loss of personal belongings.
  5. Students are to produce their ID card at the time of entering the Library and also when applying for a Library card.
  6. Personal or Library books are not allowed to be brought in or taken out of the Library without permission.
  7. Books and Journals are to be kept back in the same shelves after use.
  8. Books may be borrowed for a duration of 14 days and renew again, failing which a fine of Rs. 5/- will be charged per day.
  9. Library Cards are to be renewed every year.
  10. Cleanliness is to be maintained inside the Library. Bringing in of any eatable items, including having tea is strictly prohibited to all library users (except for Library Staff).
  11. High Resolution CCTV Cameras are installed inside and outside the Library to monitor activities. Any unwelcome behavior shall be sternly dealt with.
  12. Non - Members may be allowed to use the Library with prior permission from the Principal/Vice-Principal in black and white.
