From the Principal’s Desk:

Shillong College owes its origin to public initiative, of a group of brilliant academics along with other well-meaning, conscientious citizens of the capital city of Shillong. The noble idea behind the sustained and dedicated effort of the educated citizenry was to make college education affordable and thus accessible, particularly to the less advantaged sections of the society. The college was formally inaugurated on the15th of August, 1956 at Jail Road Boy’s High School with a total student strength of 35 boys and girls. Guided and nurtured by a set of committed teachers, backed by a host of well-wishers all under the dynamic leadership of our founder principal (Late) Shri S. C. Datta, the college gradually gained in strength and progressed rapidly surmounting obstacles and challenges until finally it was shifted to its present campus at Laitumkhrah, Shillong in the year 1962.

From its humble beginnings the college has forged ahead to become one of the premiere co-educational institutions of the State. With the enthusiastic support of an ever-active Governing Body, dedicated faculty and staff, the college is striving to become a centre of excellence, a beacon of hope, a model embodiment of the ideals upon which our Nation has been built.

Shillong College is committed to pursuing these objectives by accelerating the pace of its activities and also responding adequately to the emerging challenges of time. Today we have combination of factors such as, technological change, globalisation, economic crisis and the needed adjustment, the ambitious New Education Policy all of which are inter-related, but diverse and distinctively different in nature from those faced a few decades ago. Moreover, the world is grappling with the pandemic (COVID 19) which has affected every sphere of human activity and substantially reduced frequency of interaction demanding further change and adaptation to a new normal.

As we step into this new academic year with new hopes, dreams and still newer set of challenges, I believe every student is looking for an environment where he/she can excel, eager to acquire proficiencies that define and enable achievement and realization of full potential. Our college focuses not only on academic excellence but every student is encouraged to explore his or her unique potential and follow chosen area of interest whether in co-curricular or extra-curricular activities. The college provides ample opportunities for skill development also imparting entrepreneurship training to those desirous of it. With well-trained faculty, supportive staff, improved and constantly evolving infrastructure and technology we are sure to bring about a difference in the lives of those entrusted to our care.

I wish you all success.

Dr E. Kharkongor
