The Department of Garo was established in 1999 in Shillong College. The first lecturer in the department is Smt. Lorinda D. Marak who taught Garo as a full time teacher. Garo language is taught in Higher Secondary and Degree level. A part-time teacher, Shri. Saint Quill N. Sangma joined the department on 1st of April, 2016 and later, Shri. Salman A. Sangma on 4th of March, 2017, followed by Miss. Jakmatchi M. Sangma on 10th of July, 2018 to 2019, another teacher Smt. Samchi Nora G. Momin joined the department on 19th of July, 2019 and lastly Shri. Ayacko Salchu B. Marak joined the department on 12th of March, 2020. Honours course in Garo was introduced by the Department, At present, the Department is offering Honours, Elective and MIL Courses.

2.The Department has completed a Minor Research Project Mi Amua ( Indigeneous Religious Ceremony of Jhum Cultivation) Short Documentary Film.

- The Department of Garo is a part of Literary Circle, Shillong College, and was actively involved in organising a National Seminar on " Translation, Transcending Boundaries" in the college from 20- 22nd November,2014.
- Translation Workshops on Functional Hindi were organised by the Department of Hindi incollaboration with the Department of Garo with the aim of using the translation method as an effective way of teaching both Hindi and Garo languages.
- Various competitions with an aim to promote Hindi language to Garo students, Debates and recitations competitions etc. were organised from time to time by the Department of Hindi incollaboration with the Department of Garo.
- The Department has participated in the food festival which was held on 22nd August 2017 in connection with the celebration of Diamond Jubilee of Shillong College inorder to learn traditional Garo cuisine and preserve one's traditions and customs.
- A study tour has been taken place to witness 100 Drums Wangala Festival and students also participated in the dancing troupe; which was held at Asananggre, the headquarters of Rongram Development Block on 8th, 9th and 10th November 2017.
