All Departments

The Department of Zoology was started in the year 1963 and Shri. H. Banerjee started taking Zoology classes on 22-07-1963 as a part-time teacher but left in August in the same year when Shri. Dhiresh Chandra Dhar of St. Edmund’s College continued with the job to be followed by Shri. Monoranjan Burman of Lady Keane College till Shri (Late) Kamalaksha Dutta joined as first full-time lecturer on 1st October 1964 and also Shri. J.J. Rao as demonstrator. Shri. Dutta continued to serve as Head of the Department till his retirement but shri Rao left the job in 1965. Shri Parimal Chakraborty (1966-1972), Dr. Pranab Mukherjee (1966-1968), Shri Jahnabi Kr. Chattaraj (1968-1972) served the department with all odds but soon left with better opportunities. Dr. Samarendra Nath Dutta joined in 1969 and retired in 2003 as the Head of the Department. Meanwhile, many teachers served the college as part-time teachers. Smt. Rekha Devi joined in early seventies and then Dr. Malay Dey in July 1985. Smt. Suparna Choudhury joined as demonstrator in seventies and was engaged in managing the higher secondary practical classes. Smt. D.N. Shabong joined during the nineties to be followed by Smt. Jennifer Lyngdoh. Smt. Lyngdoh left the job in 2005 to be replaced by Dr. E.M. Pala. Dr. L.M. Jyrwa and Dr. ShanwellKhongwir joined the department in 2008 and 2009 respectively, upon the retirement of Smt. Rekha Devi and Smt. Suparna Choudhury.

Interestingly, Dr.M. Dey was appointed as the Vice-Principal of the college and Head of the Department of Zoology from 1-9-2008 to 31-7-2019. Dr. M. Dey then resumed the position of Principal In-charge upon the retirement of our former Principal Dr. K.D. Ramsiej from 1-01-2019 to 30-06-2020. After the retirement of Dr. M. Dey, Dr. S. Byrsat joined the department on 7th July, 2021.Smt. D.N. ShabongbecomeHead of the Department succeeding Dr. M. Dey, she served as HoDfor a period of 3 years and retired on 30th July, 2022. As of now the department is under the headship of Dr. E. M. Pala since 1st July, 2022. The laboratory of the Department is well equipped with lot of collections of species and suitable infrastructure and Shri. Ethelbert Pyrtuh, the laboratory attendant is taking care of the laboratory meticulously. Over the years since its inception, the Department has produced excellent results with some of them find placed in the merit list. A few to be remembered include: Dr. Malay Dey (Former Principal in-charge of the college) ranking 1st class 1st in Zoology Honours in 1981 and Shri. F.A. Lamare (presently Associate Professor, St. Anthony’s College), Smt. Anamika Gupta and Smt. Jane Kharbudon repeating the same feat in 1991, 1994 and 2016. Likewise, the students of the Department of Zoology have the credit of bringing high percentage of distinctive examination results conducted by NEHU at the undergraduate level. The teachers of the Department of Zoology have credit of as many as four Science projects conducted with the cooperation and active participation of the students and financed by the State Unit of the Department of Science and Technology. Former Head of the Department, Shri (Late) K. Dutta, conducted a research project entitled “A,B,O Blood Group in Khasi and Jaintia People in Meghalaya” inspite of the limited facilities available at that time. Smt. R. Devi, Dr. S.N. Datta and Dr. M. Dey successfully completed three different research projects in the department entitled “Chromosome Analysis and Distribution of Some Spiders of Meghalaya”, “Study of the Role of Mitotic Activity in the Early Chick Embryo (local Breed of Meghalaya)” and “Electrophoretic Survey of L.D.H. Banding pattern in the frog species of the Genus Rana from Khasi Hills, Meghalaya”. Recently, Dr. E.M.Pala, Dr. L.M.Jyrwa and Dr. S. Khongwir separately had successfully completed four UGC-sponsored minor projects entitled “Ultra-Structural and Elemental Analysis of Certain Tissues of Cyprinus carpio (Common Carp) Inhabiting Two Government Fish Farms In East Khasi Hillsa District, Meghalaya”, Studies of Nitrogen excretion pattern in different tadpole stages of Rhachophorus maximus”,“Impact of Sand and Stone Quarrying on the Aquatic Ecosystems of Umtyngar River, east Khasi Hills District, Meghalaya”, “Physico-chemical Analysis of River Umshing With Special Reference to Drinking Water Supply in Mawlai, Shillong, Meghalaya”,

Students of the Department are also involved in research projects sponsored by the college under the supervision of the faculty members. They have also started a student activity club, ‘The Zoonic Circle’ from the year 2006 under the guidance of the teachers. The aim and objectives of the club is to involve all the students in various academic activities like seminars, scientific workshop etc, and also other supporting social and cultural activities of the college.The department from time to time was also supported by contractual part-time teacher such as Mr. RevelbornSnaitang, Mr. BankerlangKharbisnop, Dr. ShngainlangKhongsti, etc.
