Sports Development Cell

Since the time of its inception in 1956, Shillong College has always maintained the balance between academics and sports and in this regard, the college constituted a Sports and Games Committee for organising different sports activities among the students of the college and also in competing in different inter-college tournaments conducted by University and other agencies. In the last six decades of its existence, the College has always been the forerunner in different sports discipline. Recently, the Sports Committee has been renamed as the Sports Development Cell in order to look into the aspects of sports and games as a Holistic approach among the students and the society at large. Realising the importance of physical fitness and healthy lifestyles, the college established the gymnasium with well-equipped exercise equipment’s of different top brands with modern technologies. The gymnasium was inaugurated in the year 2007 and the Sports Development Cell oversees the functioning of the college gymnasium. At present, many students and staffs of the college as well as gym enthusiast from outside have enrolled themselves in the gymnasium under the supervision of gym instructors Shri Sunny B. Warjri and Shri P.M. Moksha. On the basis of the recommendations of a One-Day Workshop; entitled “Physical Education and Sports – Role of Academic Institutions in the Present Scenario”, organised by the Sports and Games Committee on 5th December 2013, the college initiated the process for the introduction of the Bachelor Degree in Physical Education, a pioneering venture of the college in Meghalaya. Infrastructure was upgraded and necessary equipments and facilities were created. The relevant documents to obtain permission for starting the course were prepared and submitted to the affiliating university. However, the college is yet to start the course and is still waiting for the University’s approval of the syllabus. In 2014, two teachers were appointed viz. Shri E. Syiemlieh (MPEd) and Shri Cleverson Syiemlieh (MPEd) for the department. At present the department is run Shri Cleverson Syiemlieh (MPEd) with the assistance from two supporting staff Shri Sunny B. Warjri (BPEd) and Shri P.M.Moksha as the sports assistant. To keep the students on track for pursuing a bachelor degree in Physical Education, the college pioneered in starting a regular course on Physical Education for higher secondary students in the state of Meghalaya and the enrolment is rising every academic year since the time of establishment of the department of Physical Education in 2014. The college has improved its different sports facilities and infrastructures such as Indoor Sports Infrastructure (for Basketball, Badminton & Table Tennis), international standard size Football ground and the Swimming Pool in Shillong College extended campus at New Shillong, up to date gymnasium and various sports equipments. The Cell has been a part of the latest initiatives taken by the Government of India under the leadership of Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi to launched a ‘Fit India Movement’ which is a nation-wide movement to encourage people to remain healthy and fit by including physical activities and sports in their daily lives in 29th August, 2019(National Sports Day) at Indira Gandhi Stadium in New Delhi. The Cell has been able to promote and to provide a platform for showcasing the talents of many players and athletes at the state level, the national level and even at the international level and most of them has been placed in various secured jobs.
