The Art & Culture Committee was established a few years after the inception of the college, its purpose being to organize activities that showcase diversity in culture, religion, tradition and life style, not only that of the state, but also of the region and the country. Besides organizing activities during the Annual Social and Sports Week of the college, the committee also organizes cultural programmes during important events held in the college. It also facilitates and encourages students to participate in cultural events and inter-college meets organized from time to time either by the University, the Government or any other organizations.
Objectives:
To provide a balanced, all-round education, inculcating not only academic achievement but also development of artistic flair and creativity, as well as promoting harmony amidst diversity.
To train and promote participation of students in various platforms with a view to develop competitive spirit, confidence building and leadership qualities.
A brief highlight about the functions of the committee are as follows:- Shillong College Anthem:
For composing an anthem for the college, a competition was held among the staff, the students and the alumni in the year 2004. A selection committee was constituted for the purpose, and through a proper selection procedure, the lyrics written by Shri Paul Shylla, an alumni of the college, was selected to be the Shillong College Anthem. The music of the anthem was then composed by yet another alumni, Shri W.Shylla. Till date, students of the college proudly sing it in all major functions of the college.
- Shillong College Choir:
The college choir consists of students from various streams and under the leadership of teachers-in charge, the students have done the college proud be it in functions and events that are held in the college or in various inter-collegiate choir competitions, winning awards and prizes. Apart from the choir, many other students have brought laurels to the college in various competitions.
- Art & Culture Gallery:
On the 31st of October 2009, the college participated in a Tableau Parade organized by the Government of Meghalaya, as part of the Autumn Festival Celebration in the State. The Shillong College tableau won the competition and the college received a cash award of Rs. 70,000/- (rupees seventy thousand only) from the Department of Tourism, Government of Meghalaya and Meghalaya Tourism Development Forum.
With this cash award, the college constructed the Art and Culture Gallery, which was formally inaugurated by the Principal, Dr.(Mrs.) M. P. R. Lyngdoh on the 3rd of August 2010. The gallery exhibits the rich cultural heritage and traditions of the state and the region.
