Shillong College Higher Secondary Education is a co- educational institution. It covers an area of 8710.26 sq.m and is located in Laitumkhrah, which is an Educational hub of the Shillong town. The institution was established on 15th August 1956 with only 50 students on the rolls. The founder Principal of institution was Shri. Sudhindra Chandra Dutta. The foundation stone of the present building was laid by Shri B.P Chaliha, the then Chief Minister of the composite State of Assam. At present, the Higher Secondary Section has over 1300 students in its roll with an overwhelming majority being from the tribal population. Students from different states of the North Eastern Region are enrolled along with the local tribal boys and girls.
Shillong College Higher Secondary Education is run by the Shillong College Educational Society. The SCES was registered with proper constitution under the Meghalaya Society Registration Act (XII of 1983). The President of The College Governing Body and the Principal of the College being the President and Secretary of the society respectively.
The Shillong College Higher Secondary Education is running courses in Arts, Science and Commerce Streams and is affiliated to Meghalaya Board of School Education (MBOSE), Tura.
In 1986, classes were started with Pre-University in Arts & Commerce only in morning shift with just 35 students. But in 2019, there are over 1000 students pursuing their studies in Arts and Commerce streams.
In 1963, Science class started with P.U.Science 1st year. The Science steam has also grown from strength to strength since its inception. In 2019, the institution has over 300 students opting for the Science stream.
The institution has been trying its best to introduce relevant courses, such as Computer Applications & Physical Education from time to time to fulfil the need of the aspiring students and equip the youths with adequate Knowledge and Skill which would enable them to contribute in the process of Nation building.
