Department of Microbiology, Shillong College was established in 2007 and there are five faculty member and one Laboratory Attendant. It is now widely recognized as learning center of Microbiology within Meghalaya and other North Eastern States. The Department presently runs one academic programme, namely B. Sc. (Microbiology). It is the first college to offer BSc Microbiology and continue to be the sole college offering the subject under NEHU. More than three hundred students have completed their graduation from the Department. The alumni of the Department occupy positions of great responsibilities in different Institutions in India such as Bureau of Indian Standard, Meghalaya Pollution Control Board, etc. They are also associated with foreign Universities and Institutes such as Maryland University, USA.
The Department has good infrastructure for teaching Microbiology theory and practical. There are two B.Sc. laboratories – Lab 1 and Lab 2. Both the laboratories are well equipped with sophisticated instruments and ICT enabled with digital projector. The Department has up-to date configured computers with internet facility.
The departmental Library is managed by the faculty of the Department and is open on all working days of the week.
A total of 30-35 students are admitted every year in 1st Semester BSc Microbiology on the basis of their performance in the SSLC and HSSLC among the applicants (merit list).
