Over the years, the education scenario in our state as with the rest of the country has been expanding towards different specialised directions. Apart from this, there has been a growing emphasis towards research. To cope up with this changing scenario, the college authority under the Principalship of Dr. M. P. R. Lyngdoh felt that,as Statistics is now being used in almost all the areas of business and research activities and looking at its importance, the college would be doing a great service to the society if Statistics is introduced as one of the subjects. This would also broaden the scope of study and open up more avenues for them in this ever competitive world. As a result of the foresightedness and broad outlook of the college under the leadership of the then Principal, in the year 2004, Shri. Sankar Goswami was appointed to teach Statistics in the Higher Secondary section and thus the Department of Statistics came into being. The following year, Statistics was introduced at the Under – Graduate level as an elective paper. In the initial years, the department function with two teachers but now the number of teachers has increased to five. Since its inception, Shri S. Goswami was the head of the department. However, in the year 2011, Shri. Sankar Goswamileft the college and Miss Pushpita Das took over as the Head of the Department. When Smti. Pushpita Das left the college in 2018, Shri. Don ManikSyiem was appointed as the Head of the Department. Since 2005, Statistics was being taught only as an elective paper at the under – graduate level. However, in the year 2015 the department was able to expand its teaching with the introduction of the honours course in Statistics. The pass out percentage of the students of the department has been satisfactory with some students even featuring in the top ten list of the results published by NEHU. The department is also associated with the Department of Commerce and also assisting the Professional Courses like Microbiology and BBA.
