(L)S. C. DUTTA MEMORIAL LECTURE

Prof. (Late) Sudhindra Chandra Datta a renowned professor of Mathematics in St. Anthony’s College, alumni of the University of Dhaka, an educationist of note, was the founder Principal of Shillong College. He served the college for about fifteen long years as Principal. A true visionary and a dedicated
academician, he led a committed group of intelligentsia and laid the foundation of this glorious institution on 15th August, 1956. Leading from the front, he gave the institution much needed financial stability at the initial years of its growth and remained committed to strengthening Public Education
System all his life.

It is only befitting that the Shillong college fraternity celebrates the life and works of Late S. C. Dutta, his courage and leadership, to help raise future band of leaders who will emulate and imbibe his spirit of service and be the vanguards of change.

S. C. Dutta Memorial Lecture was instituted in the year 2014 in memory of this mammoth to help recall his contributions by the future generation of teachers and students each time the flag of Shillong College is raised.

  • First S C Dutta Memorial Lecture - Department of Mathematics, Shillong College, organised on the 18th November, 2014. The Lecture was delivered by Prof. Himadri K. Mukherjee, Dean, Physical Science, North Eastern Hill University.

    Second S C Dutta Memorial Lecture - Department of Political Science in collaboration with IQAC organised on the 10th of June, 2015 at the College Conference Hall. The lecture was delivered by Shri Toki Blah, retired IAS and President ICARE, on the topic, “Politics of Vision versus Politics of Opportunism”.

    Third S C Dutta Memorial Lecture - Department of English organized on the 31st of August, 2016 on the topic “Thinking Literature: The Culture Politics of Contexts”. The Resource person was Dr Sumit Dutta; Shri Subir Dutta, Retd. Professor, Vishva Bharti University, Shantiniketan graced the occasion as special guest.

    Fourth S C Dutta Memorial Lecture - Department of Physics entitled “Frontiers of Physics” organized on the 15th November, 2016. The resource persons were Prof. M. C. Mahato, Department of Physics, North Eastern Hill University Shillong and Dr Monojyoti Dey, Scientist SE, Centre of Plasma, Physics Institute for Plasma Research, Assam.

    Fifth S C Dutta Memorial Lecture - Department of Philosophy on the topic “Dharma and World Peace” was organized on 20th July, 2017. Prof. Moa, Department of Philosophy, North Eastern Hill University was the resource person.

    Sixth S C Dutta Memorial Lecture - Department of Commerce organised on the 17th August, 2018 on “Reflections on the India vision 2020”. Prof Pranjal Bezbarua, Department of Commerce, Dibrugarh University as the resource person.

    Seventh S C Dutta Memorial Lecture - Department of Chemistry organised on 11th November 2020 in collaboration with IQAC, Shillong College on the theme “Onward with Chemistry”. The Resource Persons was Dr S.K Gupta, former Head of Department, who joined online from Kolkata and Dr M.N.Bhattacharjee who delivered an offline presentation in the College Conference Hall.

    Eighth S C Dutta Memorial Lecture - Department of Education organised on 22nd November, 2021 on theme “Accessing Inner Resources during Crisis Moments”. The resource person for this program was FR George Palamattathil, SDB Founder Director of Siloam, Centre for Transformative Leadership.

    Ninth S C Dutta Memorial Lecture - Department of Economics organised on 14th December, 2021. Dr D.W Thangkhiew, from Department of Economics, North Eastern Hills University was the resource person.

    Tenth S C Dutta Memorial Lecture – Language Department (Khasi, Hindi & Garo) organised on 20th April, 2022 on the theme “Translation-An Important Means of Communication”. Resource person was Padmashree Prof. Badaplin War, Department of Khasi, NEHU.
